The view on the postcards
There's a reason the Table Mountain image the whole world recognises is taken from here. Across the wide sweep of Table Bay, from the beach at Bloubergstrand, the mountain sits perfectly framed — flat-topped and unmistakable, with Devil's Peak and Lion's Head trailing off beside it. It's about 15 kilometres north of the city, and it delivers the single most photographed panorama in Cape Town.
By day it's beautiful. At sunset, it's something else entirely.

When the sun goes down
Because Bloubergstrand faces roughly west across the water, the sun sets into the sea beside the mountain — and for a few minutes the whole scene ignites. The sky runs from blue to amber to burning orange, the wet sand mirrors it all, and the ships anchored in the bay turn to black silhouettes against the light. Watch it happen:

The golden reflection running up the wet sand toward you is the moment everyone waits for — and it lasts only minutes, which is exactly what makes it feel like a privilege to catch.

Timing it right
- Arrive before sunset — give yourself 30–40 minutes. The best colour often comes in the last minutes before and the few minutes after the sun drops.
- Check the wind. Blouberg is famous for it — the same wind that makes it a world-class kitesurfing beach can make a winter evening bracing. A calm, clear evening is magic; bring a layer.
- Winter vs summer. In summer the sun sets further south and later (great long golden evenings); in winter it sets earlier and the light is often crisper and clearer.
- Stay for the afterglow. Many people leave the moment the sun's gone. The sky often does its best work five or ten minutes later.

The perfect end to a Cape Town day
Bloubergstrand makes a wonderful finale. After a day out on the Peninsula or in the Winelands, timing the drive back to arrive here for sunset turns a great day into a memorable one — a quiet half-hour on the beach with the mountain glowing across the water before dinner.
