First, the short version
Cape Town has a Mediterranean climate — warm, dry summers and cooler, wetter winters — and it rewards visitors year-round. What changes is what's on: the whales, the wildflowers, the wine harvest, the beach weather, the crowds and the prices. Choose your season around what you most want to see:
- Beaches & long warm days? Come in summer (December–February).
- Whales & wildflowers? Come in spring (September–November) — or from July for whales.
- Wine harvest & calm, golden weather? Come in autumn (March–May).
- Green landscapes, low crowds & better value? Come in winter (June–August).

Summer · December – February
Cape Town's peak season, and for good reason: hot, dry, blue-sky days, and the city at its most alive. This is the time for the Camps Bay beaches, sunset drinks on the Atlantic Seaboard, long vineyard lunches and late evenings. The famous "Cape Doctor" southeaster wind can blow hard on some summer days — a local guide simply plans the day around it.
Best for: beaches, swimming, festivals, nightlife, the classic postcard Cape Town. Watch for: it's the busiest and priciest time — book tours, restaurants and accommodation well ahead. Christmas and New Year are especially full.
Autumn · March – May
Many locals' favourite season. The summer heat softens into warm, still, golden days, the wind drops, and the crowds thin. Crucially, it's harvest time in the Winelands (roughly February–April) — the vineyards are busy, the cellars are working, and there's a buzz to a wine-country visit you don't get any other time. It's an ideal window for the Winelands, Babylonstoren and the Cape Peninsula.
Best for: wine harvest, warm calm weather, photography, fewer crowds. Watch for: shorter days as autumn deepens.
Winter · June – August
Cape Town's best-kept secret. Yes, it's cooler and there's rain — but between the fronts come crisp, brilliant, washed-clean days, and the landscape turns a deep, drenched green. Crowds are low, prices drop, and estates and restaurants have time for you. It's the season of fireside wine tastings, dramatic light, moody sea days, and — from July — the first of the whales arriving in Hermanus. The Garden Route is gorgeously green, and indoor gems like the Two Oceans Aquarium and Kirstenbosch (where it's protea season) are perfect for a rainy day.
Best for: value, quiet, green scenery, whales from July, cosy wine days. Watch for: rain and wind — pack layers and a waterproof, and keep the day flexible.
Spring · September – November
Arguably the most spectacular season of all, because two of nature's great shows overlap. The southern right whales are at their peak in Walker Bay (September–October), and the West Coast erupts into wildflowers (roughly August–September). Add mild, lengthening days, gardens bursting into life, and lighter crowds than summer, and spring is hard to beat.
Best for: whales, wildflowers, mild weather, gardens, all-round variety. Watch for: a little changeable early on — spring weather can swing from warm to cool in a day.
So — when should you come?
If you're chasing a specific experience, let it choose your dates: whales mean July–November (peak Sept–Oct); wildflowers mean August–September; harvest means February–April; beaches mean December–February. If you just want beautiful weather and the full spread of Cape Town at its liveliest, aim for the shoulder months — March–April or October–November — when you get warmth, lower crowds and a bit of everything.
